Today my walk was dedicated in honor of:
Marine CPL John E. Straub, Age 19 of Wilkes-Barre, PA.
KIA Oct. 28, 1970 Vietnam
Served with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Third Marine Amphibious Force.
John was swept away during a typhoon while returning from a night ambush.
CPL Straub was awarded: National Defense, Vietnam Service, and Vietnam Campaign medals.
I am having a hard time putting into words how todays walk was. I did not plan for this walk to turn out the way it did. It was more then amazing.
About a mile into the walk the rain started coming down. I started to find cover to get in out of the rain and something just kept me going. Almost 4 miles into the walk I was walking close to the bakery and when I thought it couldn’t rain any harder , the sky’s let loose. The water was above my ankles rushing down the sidewalk. In the road the water was over a foot deep. I thought about taking cover but I felt this young Marine telling me to keep going so I kept moving forward until I finished the walk.
I want to thank everyone that honked, waved, and saluted in helping me honor this hero. CPL Straub will not be forgotten !
