Today our walk was dedicated in honor of:

Navy Veteran Michael F.Schmitz, Age 98 of Celina, TN.
Died Jul. 6, 2018

Mr. Michael F. Schimtz age 98 of Celina, TN passed away on Friday, July 6, 2018 at the Cumberland River Hospital in Celina, TN.

Mr. Michael F. “Bud” Schmitz was born in Lemont, Illinois on January 18, 1920 to the late Michael F. and Matilda (Gracak) Schmitz. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for almost 40 years as a maintenance supervisor, he also served in the Navy and was a Veteran of WWII. He loved fishing, golfing, and spending time on Dale Hollow Lake.

He is survived by his Daughter Sandy Johnson and her husband Bob; 2 Brothers: Alfred Schmitz, Bob Schmitz and his wife Pearl; 3 Grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson. Also his dear friend and caregiver Shelly and her husband Dale.

We had a great 3.01 Mile walk. This walk took place in Celina, Tennessee about an hour drive north west of Crossville, Tennessee. We started out at the Historic Clay County Courthouse and we walked east on Lake Ave. till we reached the Cemetery. We had never been to that cemetery before so we really didn’t know where Veteran Schmitz was buried so we split up and within a couple of min. I feel I was led right to his grave. We placed a penny (sign that another veteran has come to visit) and a salute.

We then continued our walk down Lake Ave for about a half mile then we headed back towards town. We got to visit with an Air Force veteran for a short visit and took some photo’s along the way. As we walked over by the bakery we got to visit with two Vietnam Navy Veterans. Really enjoyed talking with them. Shortly after that we ended our walk back at the Historic Clay County Courthouse. I want to thank my friends Manuel and Robert for walking with us today. I want to thank everyone that honked, waved, and saluted and all the people who stopped to talk with us in helping us honor this hero today. What a beautiful little town and thank you for making us feel welcomed. It was amazing.

Navy Veteran Michael F.Schmitz will not be forgotten !
