This morning my walk was dedicated in honor of :

Army TEC 5 Fred W. Haley , Age 23 of Greensburg, IN.
He was KIA during WWII on Feb. 11, 1945
Fred was aboard the ship LST 577 when it was attacked by enemy submarine

At about 8:10am a single torpedo against the stern of LST-577, roughly 1/3 of the bow was blown off, including the entire bridge. The ship broke into two and caused the aft section to sink immediately. Lost aboard were 100 U.S. Army passengers and 66 of the ship’s crew, including Captain Lt. Lt. Carl H. Stahl.

The forward section remained afloat after the attack. On February 11, 1945 the wreckage of LST-577 was scuttled by destroyer USS Isherwood DD-520 at roughly Lat 08.05N, Long 126.17E.

LST-557 was officially, stricken from the Naval Register on March 30, 1946. She earned two battle stars for World War II service.

226 survivors. Fred was one of the missing and his remains was considered non-recoverable.

Had a great 5.46 Mile walk this morning. I want to thank everyone for their honks and waves in helping me honor this hero this morning. I was friends with their family back when I was in High school.

We will keep his memory alive.
