Today our walk was dedicated in honor of:

Army Spc. Shane W. Woods, Age 23 of Palmer, Alaska
KIA Aug. 9, 2006 Operation Iraqi Freedom

Shane was going to become a Military Chaplain

Spc Woods was assigned to 1st Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Friedberg, Germany

He was killed when an IED detonated near his Humvee during combat operations in Ramadi, Iraq.

Spc. Shane W. Woods of Palmer, Alaska was a 2003 graduate of Palmer High School, where he was very involved with the Junior ROTC. He was an excellent kid, respectful in the way he conducted himself. In 2002, he received the Alaska National Guard Adjutant General’s Award and in 2003 was selected as the Commanding General, United Staes Army Alaska JROTC Cadet of the Year. Involved with the family guiding business, he grew up hunting and fishing in the Alaska wilds. He had a special love for climbing and hiking in the Taylor Mountains of Western Alaska and the Chugach Mountains near his home. His fellow soldiers knew him to be a real warrior, with strong belief in his mission to protect what we have at home. He was a talented poet and photographer, and had a strong faith in Jesus Christ.

Spc Woods is buried at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery in Anchorage Borough, Alaska.

We had a great 6.82 Mile walk this morning. Before stopping by the 9/11 Memorial we walked by the Army National Guard Armory. We then headed up town to the War Memorial Park. Before heading home we walked by the Military Memorial Museum. I want to thank my friend Robert for walking with us today and I want to thank all who honked, waved, and saluted. We had 169 honks this morning. It was amazing. Thank you.

Army Spc. Shane W. Woods will not be forgotten !
