Raymond, the son of Alex Santora and Delores Santora of Cleveland OH, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on November 8, 1967 in Cleveland OH, He arrived in Vietnam on April 27 andwas assigned for duty with Company H, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF. In mid-June, the 2d Battalion was assigned to the SLF and his unit was re-designated Company H, BLT 2/7, 9th MAB.
On November 21, during Operation MEADE RIVER the day began with heavy air and artillery air strikes and barrages on the Horseshoe where the enemy forces had constructed elaborate fortifications and trench systems. Once again Marines went on the attack trying to breach the heavy NVA defences meeting fierce enemy fire from a determined enemy who fought from mutually supporting bunkers and trenches. The battle with the enemy forces would continue throughout the day.
Wounded and evacuated, PFC Santora died at the Station Hospital NSA Da Nang as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds to the head and body sustained from a hostile explosive device the previous day.
PFC Antora was awarded: Purple Heart, National Defense, Vietnam Service, and Vietnam Campaign Medals
We had a great 6.42 Mile walk today. I want to thank everyone who honked, waved and saluted in helping me honor this hero.
Marine PFC Raymond Paul Santora will not be forgotten !
