Today our walk was dedicated in honor of:
Army Veteran SPC Travis Brian Tullis, Age 38 of Beech Island, SC.
Died Apr. 10, 2017
He was an Iraqi War Veteran and served with the 3rd Infantry, 3rd Division
Spreading awareness of veteran suicide and prevention was a cause Travis embraced. Suffering from PTSD himself, on an April night, he went to the VA and urgently stated he needed help. A security officer escorted him to the ER and said he needed to wait for the social worker. In completing the paperwork, he wrote “I almost shot myself.” He then waited and waited. Someone came to take his vitals. He stormed out, receiving no treatment. When they finally read his paperwork and realized he was in crisis, they ordered a welfare check at his home (using the wrong address). He returned and shot himself in his car, literally in the shadow of the VA Hospital.
His mother has taken up the cause of suicide awareness and prevention.
We had a great 5.83 mile walk this morning. We started out by walking by Lake Holiday and just enjoying the water. We then headed up town to the War Memorial Park and on the way their we stopped to look at some Fall Decorations along the street. After our visit at the War Memorial Park we stop to see the big flag at the Bakery as the wind was really blowing and the flag was so beautiful. I want to thank everyone who honked, waved, and saluted in helping me honor this hero. We had 190 honks. It was amazing. Thank you.
Army Veteran SPC Travis Brian Tullis will not be forgotten !
