Today my walk was dedicated to Army Spc. Joseph F. Herndon II, Age 21 of Derby, Kansas. He was shot and killed July 29 of 2004 while on guard duty in Hawijah, Iraq. He was based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii and is survived by his wife, Melanie.
He was wounded twice since arriving in Iraq, He insisted on returning each time. Fellow soldiers said he once had to be forced onto a truck to get medical treatment because he didn’t want to leave his unit. Some 1,500 people attended a memorial at his high school where the former football player was remembered as a model of loyalty.
He was assigned to the Army’s 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division. He had joined the Army in 2002.
Sir, You will NOT be forgotten.
