Today our walk was dedicated in honor of:
Marine CPL Augusto Jose Garcia, Age 26 of Cookeville, TN.
KIA Jul. 17, 1968 Vietnam
CPL Garcia Served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 27th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Third Marine Amphibious Force.
Garcia came to Cookeville five years ago to attend Tennessee tech, where he was a senior in music education when he withdrew in 1967 to join the USMC. The Garcias were married at First Methodist Church in August, 1966.
Garcia, of Cookeville, was three weeks away from ending his tour
of duty in Vietnam when the Marine’s life was ended by a landmine while he was on patrol.
Two days later, the dog he’d shipped to his 4 1/2 month
old daughter, Marcia, arrived in Cookeville. He’d
never seen his daughter.
He is buried in the Cookeville City Cemetery.
He is honored at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall on Panel 52W, Line 42
We had a great 6 Mile walk today. We walked by Holiday Hills Lake and then headed up town to the War Memorial Park. We stopped and read several names on the Memorial Wall. We then walked by the old train depot and before heading home we stopped in at the Frost Cemetery and visited with some of our Fallen Brothers. I want to thank everyone who honked, waved, and saluted in helping me honor this hero today. We had 168 honks today. It was amazing. Thank you.
Marine CPL Augusto Jose Garcia will not be forgotten !
