My walk today was dedicated in honor of:
Civil War Veteran Alfred Cleaveland Aytes, Age 66 of Crab Orchard
Died Apr 24 1896
Alfred was a Captain in 1st Tn Inf. Union Army, August 9, 1861 to September 1864. He also was granted a teaching certificate at the Teachers Institute in Crossville, TN. He taught school in the 1860’s according to the census of Cumberland Co., TN. In 1894, the Chronicle listed Alfred as serving as a Justice of the Peace.
We had a great 3.10 Mile walk today. We first tried to find the cemetery that he was located in but after searching the woods for almost two hours we decided to just go forward with our walk. He is located in the Aytes Family Cemetery that is located behind the westbound rest area in the woods. I want to thank my friend Robert for walking with me today and I want to thank all those who honked, waved, and saluted in helping me honor this hero today. We had 72 honks. It was amazing. Thank you
Civil War Veteran Alfred Cleaveland Aytes will not be forgotten !
