Army SSGT Kenneth W. Mayne, Age 29 of Arvada, CO.
KIA Sep. 4, 2008 during Operation Iraqi Freedom
SSGT Mayne was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas
Staff Sergeant Kennith W. Mayne, 29, of Arvada, Colorado. He was a goofy kid with a big smile, a free spirit and a “talent for knowing exactly what he could and couldn’t get away with.” His large, extended family was very close, and at the age of 2, the whole family decided to move from California to Colorado. As a teenager, Ken got into some trouble and had no direction. His mother suggested the military for him, and it proved to be the right choice for Ken. He graduated from Arvada West High School in 1997 and enlisted right after in the Army. He grew into a bigger, stronger, mature and respectful man. Ken was involved in the original invasion with Operation Iraqi Freedom, as part of the 101st Airborne Division. Extremely proud to be a soldier, believing in the work he and the military were doing, he felt strongly about the mission and knew he was helping the people of Iraq. He felt tremendous compassion for the Iraqi children, often giving them candy, toys and food. Currently assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas, he was killed when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Ken loved history and obtained some college education at Troy University in Alabama. He was set to be stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado when he returned home. Having lived all across the globe, his first love was Colorado, especially the Rocky Mountains.
We had a great 6.99 mile walk this morning. We headed east on Sparta Hwy and walked by the National Guard Armory and then made a stop at the 9/11 Memorial before heading up town to the War Memorial Park. We then took several side roads and headed back towards the house. I want to thank my friend Robert for walking with us today and I want to thank everyone who honked, waved, and saluted in helping us honor this hero today. We had 133 honks. It was amazing. Thank You
