Our walk today was dedicated in honor of:
Army SGT Louis Joaquin Navarro Jr., Age 35 of Berkeley, CA.
Died Apr. 28, 2020
Born in Berkeley, CA on March 28, 1985, Navarro grew up in Vallejo, CA. He was most recently assigned to 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Honolulu, HI.
Navarro joined the U.S. Army in 2010. He completed basic training at Fort Knox, KY, and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Navarro continued his Active Duty service until 2013, then transitioned to the Army Reserves. He received an Honorable Discharge in 2017.
Navarro was the oldest of six children and assumed the role of protector early on. Once he transitioned to the Army Reserves, he began taking college courses. Navarro enrolled in the Fire Science Program at Los Madonos College, graduating in 2015. After military service, he attended Firefighter school and went to work as an Operator at Phillips 66 Refinery. Navarro loved fishing and started a business that focused on custom-built rods. He was creative and enjoyed building things and working with his hands. Navarro looked forward to BBQ-ing with his Dad, relaxing at the ocean, camping, and riding his motorcycle with his Club family. And if the Oakland Raiders or Oakland A’s were playing, Navarro would be cheering them on! His wife was his ‘person’, and he placed the highest value on time spent with her and their children. Navarro’s loved ones honor his legacy of service and devotion.
We had a great 8.28 Mile walk today. We walked to the 9/11 Memorial and Cumberland County Fire Department. We then walked over by the Post Office and stopped in at the City Fire Department on Industrial Blvd. We then headed up town to the War Memorial Park and then to the Fire Department Headquarters. We then headed back home. I want to thank my friend Robert for walking with us today. I want to thank all those who honked, waved and saluted in helping us honor this hero.
Army SGT Louis Joaquin Navarro Jr will not be forgotten !
