Our walk today was dedicated in honor of:
Army Veteran SGT Elvis A. Presley Age 42 of Memphis, TN.
Died Aug 16, 1977
Elvis Aron Presley entered the United States Army at Memphis, TN. on Mar 24, 1958, and then spent three days at the Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, Reception Station. He left active duty at Fort Dix, NJ. on March 5, 1960, and received his discharge from the Army Reserve on March 23, 1964.
He served in Company D, 32nd Tank Battalion, 3rd Armor Division in Friedberg, Germany, where he attained the rank of sergeant.
When Elvis Presley turned 18 on January 8, 1953, he fulfilled his patriotic duty and legal obligation to register his name with the Selective Service System, thereby making himself eligible for the draft.
The Navy offered to create a specially trained “Elvis Presley” company, just for him. … Instead, Elvis refused any special treatment and entered the military as a regular recruit – just like everybody else.
Today we had a great 4.05 Mile walk in Nashville, TN. It was a very cold walk. I think it was around 16 to 18 deg. when we started. The sidewalks were covered with ice , and packed snow. Looked like they might have gotten 6 to 8 inches. We walked Broadway Street and made a stop by the Elvis Presley statue and then we walked to the end of Broadway and looked at the river. We then walked to the Walk of Fame Park and then back to Broadway. On our way back down Broadway we could hear music. It was a great walk and a great honor to walk with Elvis on his birthday. I want to thank my friend Robert for walking with us today and I want to thank those that honked in helping us honor him. We had two honks. Thank You.
Army Veteran SGT Elvis A. Presley will not be forgotten !
