My walk today was dedicated in honor of:
Army SP4 Peter Mathew Guenette, Age 20 of Troy, NY.
KIA May 18, 1968
He is honored at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall on panel 62E, Line 18
SP4 Guenette is buried at Saint Johns Cemetery in Lansingburgh, NY.
Vietnam War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient was trained as a machine gunner and reached the rank of Specialist 4. He was killed in action while assigned to Co. D, 2nd Battalion, 506th Inf., 3rd brigade. While heavily engaged with an enemy unit in the QuanTanUyen Province, Peter and his assistant gunner and two other soldiers were laying down suppression fire when an enemy grenade landed next to Peter. At the age of 20 he made the decision to jump on top of the grenade allowing his body to absorb the blast thus saving his fellow soldiers.
We had an amazing 5.83 Mile walk this morning. Beautiful weather. We stopped at the War Memorial Park down town . I want to thank my friend Robert for walking with us today and I want to thank all who honked, waved, and saluted in helping me honor tis hero. It was amazing.
Army SP4 Peter Mathew Guenette will not be forgotten !
