My walk this morning was dedicated in honor of:
Army Air Corps Veteran William Morgan Anderson, Age 96 of Crossville, TN.
Died Feb. 14, 2019
He grew up in Clifty and was called by his middle name of Morgan until graduating from Crossville High School in 1941.
The family soon moved to Dayton, OH, where Bill enlisted in the Army Air Corps, training as a pilot. He and his crew picked up their B-24 on April 1, 1944, in Topeka, KS, and flew the southern route to Europe, arriving at Guila Field, Italy, on April 30, 1944, as part of the 756th Bomb Squadron. On his very first bombing mission as a co-pilot with the 459th Bomb Group, his plane was shot down over Campina, Romania, as they were bombing oil refineries. Although some crew members were lost, Bill was able to parachute out and was captured by German forces, becoming a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft III in Poland.
He was later marched to Moosburg, Germany, Stalag Luft VII, and remained a POW there until liberated April 29, 1945.
After the war, Bill attended the University of Dayton and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1949. He was employed at Standard Register in Marketing Services until he retired.
Bill was an avid golfer and trap shooter and was active until his early 90s. He won a few tournaments in the state and around the country and had several holes-in-one. He enjoyed collecting guns and he traveled almost yearly to the Grand Am in Vandalia, OH, and Sparta, IL. He was a charter member of the Fairfield Glade Sportsman Club. He was also an excellent fisherman.
We had a great 9 mile walk this morning. The weather was beautiful. I want to thank everyone who honked and waved in helping me honor this hero. It was amazing.
He will NOT be forgotten !
