Our walk today was dedicated in honor of:

Army Veteran George W. Conatser, Age 80 of Poplar Cove, TN.
Died Sep. 2, 1920

His nick name was Old Hickory.
Served as a union soldier in the Civil War.

Old Hickory served in Company D., 2nd Tennessee Infantry and was with Sherman’s Army in its march to the sea. He enlisted in 1861 and was discharged November 6, 1865 at Knoxville, Tennessee.

He served as Justice of the Peace, Sheriff of Fentress County for eight years and Deputy United States Marshal for four years. In politics he was a Republican. He was perhaps the best known man in the County and wielded a wide influence among his friends. He owned a large farm in the Poplar Cove and lived upon it. A coal mine operated upon it for some years to supply Local trade.

We had a great 6.45 Mile walk today. We walked by Holiday Hills Lake and then we headed up town to the Veterans Memorial Park where I participated in the 16th Annual Pro-Troop Rally. It was great seeing all the people. This is an amazing event. If you have not been to it, plan on attending next year. After the event we headed back towards the house. I want to thank everyone who honked, waved, and saluted in helping me honor this hero. Today we had 253 honks. It was amazing. Thank you.

Army Veteran George W. Conatser will not be forgotten !
